The Shubert Foundation, Inc. is the largest institutional funder of theatre education programs throughout NYC public schools. Since 2005, The Shubert Foundation has provided close to $8 million to the New York City Department of Education for theatre and arts education programs.
The Shubert Foundation’s theatre education programs elevate the teaching practice of DOE theatre educators and support high-quality theatre instruction for students across New York City. This targeted, multifaceted approach to the enrichment of theatre education highlights the relevance and impact of theatre programming to all members of the school community.

BROADWAY JUNIOR® PROGRAM
The Shubert Foundation, Music Theatre International (MTI), and the DOE bring musical theatre into underserved, low-arts NYC public middle schools—creating an environment for both students and the arts to flourish. Each year, nearly 100 schools in all five boroughs and District 75 participate via performing and production.
In the first year of the program, teachers and students are guided step-by-step through the process of producing a first-ever musical in their schools. In the second year, teachers and students continue to receive support and encouragement on their second musical, but take ownership over their productions. In the third year and beyond, schools present a musical independently, and serve as inspiration for other schools involved in earlier stages of the program.
The Shubert Foundation’s
High School Theatre Festival
More than 100 talented young NYC public school theatre artists make their Broadway debuts annually in a festival that celebrates five outstanding high school student productions from the current school year, selected from more than 20 productions across the city by professional theatre artists and theatre educators. Over the course of the Festival’s 10-year history, school productions from all five boroughs have performed at the event.
